In 1980, part of Ronald Reagan’s campaign was prominence on controlling the “evil empire” of the Soviet Union. Few days after taking office, President Reagan blamed the Soviet Union and Cuba of sending military supplies to Communist guerrillas in El Salvador through Nicaragua. Reagan right after began supporting the anti-Sandinista guerrillas known as the Contras. Sharply criticized for comparing the Contras to the U.S., Reagan made this national address on May 9, 1984, to clarify his goal in helping to pursue democracy.
This provides a large reason for what he told the public as the reason for why I believe the public did not take this scenario as not such importance. As this was 20 years after the Cuban missle crisis, and the world is still scared of the thought of communism attacking the United States. Tying the Nicaragua to both the Soviet Union and Cuba are way to convince the public of what is about to happen with the contras is the goal of protection.
